How to get paid faster as a tradesperson
By the TradePA team · 24 June 2026 · 6 min read
Finishing the job is only half of it. The other half — actually getting the money in — is where a lot of good trades quietly lose out, because chasing feels awkward and it is easy to forget. Here is how to get paid faster without turning into a debt collector.
Invoice straight away
The single biggest lever: invoice the day you finish, not at the weekend. The job is fresh in the customer’s mind and they are most willing to pay right then. Every day you wait, the urgency fades.
Make it easy to pay
If paying means digging out a sort code and doing a bank transfer, some people put it off. Give them a card payment or a pay link and you remove the friction — and the excuse.
Agree terms before you start
For anything sizeable, agree a deposit and stage payments up front, in writing. It protects your cashflow and means you are never carrying the cost of a big job on your own card.
Chase early, and politely
A reminder is not rude. A short, friendly "just a nudge on the invoice from Tuesday" a few days after it is due sorts most late payers. Most just forgot.
Know who owes you what
You cannot chase what you cannot see. Keep a clear running list of who owes you, how much, and how overdue — not a vague feeling that a few people still owe you.
Or let it chase for you
TradePA knows exactly who owes what and how overdue, and chases them for you — politely, automatically. Money in, no awkward phone calls. See how it works.
